January 16, 2010. Calgary, AB. ABC partnered with Robyn Williams, a biathlon coach at FNSC, and her "gang" of Masters athletes to host an introductory session to 30 members of the Calgary Outdoor Club. The beautiful sunny skies and mountain peaks around looked promising as the cars started filling up the parking lot at Mt. Shark. The picked location turned out to be a true wonderland with about 8 inches of fresh snow that made skiing challenging, yet somehow enjoyable. Robyn ran a full-scale biathlon practice, starting with the safety rules, range and rifle operation after which the entire group was divided into 9 teams. Both prone and standing positions were practiced and the relay races were a lot of fun. A 3-hour session sparked a lot of interest among the COC members as Robyn was bombarded with the question on everything and anything biathlon, from technical things to racing at the Olympics. We would like to especially thank FNSC's Masters for staying late and volunteering their skills and knowledge to help us with the demonstration. Your input was great and COC has very much appreciated your assistance. |
